Exploring Gems Shows

Ever want to be able to compare hundreds of jewelry stores at once -- being able to actually see, touch and feel the merchandise easily?

Try going to gem and jewelry shows! There you can find every type of jewelry imaginable - from tiaras to toe rings. There are many many types of gemshows. Not all have hundreds of stores - but many do. The one in Tucson, AZ in February has thousands of vendors.

They are great fun and worth exploring.

Lessons Learned From EBay

Things are rarely as they appear. One thinks that online auctions will always be a great deal. Sometimes they are a wonderful deal -- other times they are a way to pay way too much.

Learn the ins and outs of auction buying - especially for jewelry and jewelry making supplies so you can be a savvy buyer who gets the most value for your purchase.

    1. Examine The Auction Photo Carefully

It is said that a picture is worth a 1000 words. When looking at a photo of jewelry or jewelry supplies, examine the contents. Generally, if the item looks a mess, you will minimally be spending a fair bit of time cleaning and sorting your items if you decide to bid. Additionally, if it looks disorganized it often isn't the treasure you are dreaming of.

See if the photographer added a coin for size comparison so you have a better idea how much you are getting.

    2. Missing Words Tell All

We all fill in the blanks. When buying from an auction read exactly what is written.

      If a description doesn't say 14kt or 18kt gold, it isn't.

When it says silver, it is NOT sterling unless specified.

If it says "pearls", it is usually fake (plastic) pearls, cheap imitation pearls or possibly (if you are lucky) fresh water pearls.

If the item still truly interests you, you can always ask the seller for clarifications.

    3. Examine the Deal

Are the items something that you need, want and will use? If you are buying them for someone else, are the items new (or in new condition if buying something vintage).

Is the shipping rate reasonable and the estimated delivery time suitable for your needs? Is the overall price still in your budget?

Would this be something you would spend an equivalent amount for in a store - or would you buy other things? Make sure you only bid what it is worth to you.

    4. Verify Seller Rating

Make sure seller has a good rating. Read the comments as well as the the ratings themselves to make sure the rating is from selling.

If there is any doubt, consider buying elsewhere.
