New Years Resolution - Sprucing Up Your Jewelry

As a nice way to start out the New Year, why not clean up your jewelry box? You'll have more beautiful and desirable jewelry and your jewelry will last longer. Use these simple ideas to have more sparkle in your life.

    1. Bring New Life to Broken Jewelry

Often jewelry repair is delayed. Look at any broken jewelry you may have. If you like it, repair it. You can either do it your self or go to a jeweler to have it done. If you don't like the broken jewelry, consider using parts of it in another jewelry piece. If you have several broken pieces, you may be able to combine them into something you love.

    2. Maintain Jewelry

Examine gemstone mounts, clasps, chains and bead necklaces (such as pearls) for damage. Repair ring prongs, tighten clasps, untangle chains and restring necklaces. It is much nicer to maintain a well loved piece than possibly lose a gemstone or necklace.

    3. Get Your Jewelry to Sparkle

Cleaning jewelry often makes it look brand new. You can clean it yourself or stop by your favorite jewelry store to get your rings cleaned. They will shine much brighter and look even nicer.

Using a sunshine cloth on silver brightens it up quickly. Soft cotton cloths can be used on most jewelry safely and easily. For suggestions on cleaning specific stones, see: Gemstone Information

    4. Transform Your Jewelry

Often one owns pieces of jewelry that they never wear. If this is the case with you, ask yourself why you don't wear specific pieces of jewelry. If it because it is uncomfortable, see if resizing or fixing it will help.

If you are not wearing the jewelry because it is unfashionable, consider simple ways to remake it by reusing stones or pieces for a new look:

      * Trying chains with different pendants
      * Using a ring as a pendant or a charm
      * Restringing beads in a different pattern
      * Adding charms to a bracelet or necklace

If you still have a piece of jewelry that is left over, you can see if you can trade it with a friend.

      Play and have fun.
