Birthstone Rings

Birthstone rings are a sweet gift used to demonstrate your caring and love. Birthday rings, friendship rings and promise rings are commonly made with birthstones. All these rings are made just a bit more special by having a birthstone in it. It shows you went to an effort to add that little something extra to make your gift personalized.

Every month of the year has at least one birthstone, associated with it. Traditionally, starting in the first century, birthstone rings were given to help one overcome the obstacles associated with the month the person was born. They were said to increase one's strengths, bring good luck and decrease ones weaknesses. Over the years, it is more common to use birthstone rings as a simple celebration of ones birth and the joy associated with it. Still, if you want a birthstone from an older tradition, please use our birthstone chart. For each birth stone ring you can learn about the meanings associated with each birthstone and the significance past civilizations gave these precious gemstones.

If you are looking for a precious gift for your mother, consider a Family Birthstone Ring (also known as a Mother's Ring). Family Birthstone Rings are made by having the birthstone of each one of her children added to a ring. The birthstones are set in order of the childrens birth from left to right. Optionally, one may also include the birthsotne of both the mother (herself) and father. (These stones would come after the children's birthstones.) If you can afford it, consider using genuine stones as this will become an heirloom for the family. Include a nice card expressing your gratitude for having such a wonderful mom.

When buying a birthstone ring, you need to know the person's ring size, how big a stone they like to wear, the shape of the stone they would like, and the month they were born.

If you uncertain of someone's ring size, measure one of their rings that fits the finger they will be wearing the ring on. Alternately, if you are using a ring sizer, be sure to use it at the end of the day when your hands are not cold to get the most accurate size. When measuring ring size, the sizer should easily slide over the knuckle. Feel free to use our Free Ring Sizer to measure yourself or your rings. Be sure to measure the exact finger as hands often differ in size.

When choosing the shape of a gemstone in a ring, take notice of the hand the ring will be worn on. If they have long fingers, oval stones look very elegant. For shorter fingers, having a round or square ring looks great. A heart shaped ring is very special and tends to delight anyones hand.

When possible, getting a durable stone is recommended as no matter how careful you are, it is likely to get banged at some point of time. Opal, though popular for rings, is not recommended unless the person is very careful as it is easily damaged.

Be sure to remove birthstone rings before swimming, gardening, cleaning and applying make up. Keeping your birthstone ring out of the sun when not being worn is recommended. A ring holder is great for storing rings when not in use.
